Winter in New York City - 2014

Sunday, March 23, 2014

I know I'm partial because I grew up in a state with four distinct seasons, but I just can't imagine living somewhere without snow in the winter. Thankfully, New York doesn't disappoint in the least. In fact, we got more snow here than I remember seeing in the past several winters!

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently?
And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says
'Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.'"  - Lewis Carroll

“It's snowing still," said Eeyore gloomily.
"So it is."
"And freezing."
"Is it?"
"Yes," said Eeyore. "However," he said, brightening up a little, "we haven't had an earthquake lately.”
-- A. A. Milne

Shop Update - March 2014

Wednesday, March 19, 2014

One of the most exciting things that I decided to do in March was open a shop on Society6. This site allows me to upload my original designs and then select various products to have printed with that design. The site runs frequent specials including free worldwide shipping and $5 off each item.

Right now, I'm focusing on getting some simple state-related designs up in the store. Once I have all the states completed, I have grand designs for my next project already!

Here is a selection of the types of items you can buy:

California art print

Indiana iPhone cover crossroads of america

kentucky black shirt together we stand divided we fall ky

ohio motto card black with god all things are possible

ohio pink onesie baby

List of Ten - March 2014

Following a challenge from Darling Magazine, I decided to start a new monthly feature: List of Ten. Here's what Darling suggests:

Without thinking too hard about it, quickly list the things you love right now – things you may not take the time to really enjoy but that you should.

1. Duolingo - I recently started refreshing my German language knowledge! I love Duolingo's iPhone app

2. Essie geranium nail polish

3.  When bus drivers wait for elderly riders to find a seat before they begin to drive again

4. Beef brisket

5. Caudalie cleanser

6. Checking the mailbox for snail mail

7. Good shower water pressure

8. Dennis the Menace

9. Chilly weather

10. Last, but not least - cilantro!

Underappreciated Underground

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

One of my favorite things about living in New York City is all the public transportation options. It's been so convenient to hop on a train or bus to get from point A to point B in the City. As if that wasn't good enough already, many of the subway stations have beautiful mosaic work adorning their underground walls. Here are some of my favorites from recent weeks:

Restaurant Report: Oaxaca - Upper West Side

Monday, March 3, 2014

I had the pleasure of visiting Oaxaca Taqueria with some friends from church a few nights ago (Psst! Check out how to pronounce "Oaxaca" here). There are several locations around NYC, but we were at the Upper West Side location this time.

I ordered the Oaxaca salad (sans beans) with barbacoa. It was so good! The portion was generous with a lot of meat. Everything tasted very fresh and delicious.

The only downside of the experience was that there's not a lot of seating, so we had to wait a few minutes after we ordered our food to sit down. However, it was nothing extreme and we were there around 7PM on a Sunday so it was not surprising.

All in all, it was a great experience and I'll definitely be going back!
