Travel: Austin, October 2013

Thursday, October 17, 2013

Well, after my countdown of several months, I finally got to go to the Austin City Limits music festival (ACLfest)! My weekend in Austin turned out really well - even though the last day of the festival was rained out. I think I can speak for the group and say that Tyler, Spenser (Tyler's roommate and friend from college), and I all really enjoyed getting to go to ACLfest. I didn't even get sunburned too badly, haha. I think my favorite sets were Muse and Jake Bugg!

When the festival got rained out on Sunday, we stayed in, ordered riceless sushi, and watched football.

One perk of visiting Tyler in Austin was hanging out with his cats - Zelda Fitzgerald (gray/multi) and Grandma Moses (black). Since they aren't used to me they were pretty skittish, but that didn't stop me from trying to be their friend ;-)

I wrote about my last trip to Austin here.

Countdown to ACL - 5 Days Left

Sunday, October 6, 2013

In anticipation of traveling to Austin for the ACL Music Festival, I'm counting down the days and listening to some old and new (to me) artists who will be at the festival. Note: If you are reading this via a feed reader, you may have to click through the see the video in the full post.

If you haven't heard of Grouplove or their song "Tongue Tied," then you haven't been listening to contemporary music stations for the past year or so!

11 things about The Price is Right

Here's Mister Rogers' monthly quote for October:
"Whether we’re children or adults, adding to our emotional vocabulary can often add to our ability to cope with what we’re feeling. Using words to describe what’s inside helps remind us that what we’re experiencing is human...and mentioning our feelings to others can make those feelings more manageable."

Louisville Loves - Highland Morning

Thursday, October 3, 2013

Not really sure how I have avoided blogging about one of my very favorite Louisville restaurants, but I've managed it somehow. Highland Morning is my top breakfast-y, brunch-y place in Louisville. The only downside it used to have was that sometimes the wait was a little long, but they have recently expanded into the shop next door and the last four times I have gone I haven't had to wait at all!

I order the same thing every time I go (the Wake Me Up omelet - pictured below), so it's hard for me to make recommendations beyond that; however, everyone who I've ever taken to Highland Morning has really liked their food. Be sure to ask what the grits of the day are if you go! Sometimes they have a sign with the info, but it's easy to miss.

Side note: since I don't eat grains, if you go with me you'll have the opportunity to double your complimentary side of bread and potentially feel like a carb-ivore (see one of my co-eater's plates below). :-)

Rachel's Baby Shower

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

This past weekend I went to Columbus, Ohio to help celebrate the upcoming birth of baby Johanna! She'll be firstborn daughter of my friends, Rachel and Tim. I was so excited to be a part of the event since I feel like I often miss out on out-of-town friends' life events.

The theme was "Ready to Pop" so all the decorations and food were things related to "popping" - popcorn, balloon, soda "pop," etc. Very cute!

One thing I really appreciate about Rachel and her family is that they are super creative and love crafts! In that vein, they had several crafty activities for the guests to participate in like decorating diapers and writing notes of encouragement to Johanna.

In addition to the shower this past weekend, I also enjoyed spending rare and treasured time with my best friends from college! Rachel, Shelby, and I were close during our years together in college, and we have really made an effort to keep that up. We went out to eat, went shopping, and did a LOT of catching up :-)

Can't be in Columbus for more than a day and not go to Jeni's. Although I would obviously really enjoy it, I'm sort of glad I don't live in a city with a Jeni's. That way it's a special treat to look forward to when I travel!

All in all, it was a wonderful weekend. Thankful for my friends and my ability to see them several times a year! Looking forward to meeting Miss Johanna soon :-)

Today's song comes from one of the ACL headliners, The Cure! Even if you haven't listened to a lot of The Cure's music before, you've likely heard this song on TV or in movies...
